For many owners, a watch winder for Nomos is simply the wrong accessory, and we say so deliberately before the first product recommendation. Nomos Glashütte still builds a large part of its watches with manual winding, from the Alpha calibre of 2005 to the current DUW 4001. Only the automatic movements of the DUW series benefit from a winder at all. If a Tangente neomatik or an Ahoi neomatik does come into the house, the second hurdle is the holder, because these watches are small, flat and light. It is exactly on this basis that we have ordered the six devices on this page.
The recommendations at a glance
| Model | Slots/type | Key feature | Price range | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| botta Cube | 1 position per module | 9 programmes from 600 to 1,800, approx. 14 decibels | upper mid-range | 4,2/5 |
| Beco Technic Boxy Carbon Single 1 Classic | 1 position, modular | German manufacturer, stackable system | Mid-range | 4,4/5 |
| Barrington Single Watch Winder Crimson Red | 1 slot | 5 levels in figures, mains or battery | Mid-range | 4,2/5 |
| MODALO Inspiration MV4 for 1 watch, black | 1 slot | Solid wood, load capacity up to 400 grams | upper mid-range | 4,2/5 |
| Klarstein St. Gallen II | 1 slot | 650 as the first programme, touch control panel | Entry level | 4,1/5 |
| SONGMICS watch winder for 1 watch (JWB030B01) | 1 slot | 4 modes, LED light, lock, USB-C | Entry level | 4,0/5 |
The highest overall rating in the field goes to the Beco Technic Boxy with 4.4 out of 5 points. For Nomos, we still put the botta Cube in first place. It comes from a German design studio and, with its clear, reduced design language, fits a manufacture from Glashütte in spirit. Above all, though, with nine programmes from 600 to 1,800 revolutions per day it has the finest gradation of this selection. The derived Nomos range of 650 to 800 can therefore be hit cleanly instead of being roughly overshot. Which other designs exist is covered in our buying guide to watch winders.
The devices in detail

botta Cube
- Nine rotation programmes from 600 to 1,800 revolutions per day give the finest gradation of this selection. You can therefore target the derived Nomos range of 650 to 800 precisely, instead of skipping over it with a coarse step
- The brushless direct drive comes close to a whisper at around 14 decibels. A Tangente neomatik can therefore even sit on the bedside table without any motor noise remaining in the room
- A single aluminium module is compact and holds a flat watch without letting it disappear in a large display cabinet. USB or battery operation lets you choose the location freely
- Each additional module costs the full module price, and the holder is a standard cushion. With a narrow 18 millimetre leather strap on a Tangente 35, you should check the fit after placing the watch

Beco Technic Boxy Carbon Single 1 Classic
- Beco Technic manufactures in Germany and thus fits a Saxon manufacture in spirit. Instead of an anonymous imported device, you get a tangible contact for spare parts
- The interval motor with belt drive works without a rattling gear train. For a flat watch with a DUW 3001 only 3.2 millimetres thin, smooth, even running is the more suitable environment
- A single Boxy module is compact and does not look oversized next to a 35 mm Tangente. If a second automatic joins later, you simply stack another module on top
- In the Amazon listing, the manufacturer does not state specific turns per day for each programme. If you want to set the derived range of 650 to 800 deliberately, botta or Barrington is more precise

Barrington Single Watch Winder Crimson Red
- Five rotation settings are shown as numbers on the unit: 650, 750, 850, 1,000 and 1,950 turns per day. For a DUW 3001 or DUW 5001, choose bidirectional mode and the 650 or 750 setting
- Clockwise, counter-clockwise and bidirectional are selectable separately. With Nomos you only need bidirectional, but the setting stays transparent instead of hidden behind a programme name
- The Japanese motor runs on the power adapter or on two AA batteries. That means the unit also fits in a drawer or cabinet without a power socket
- The cushion is designed for medium-sized cases. On a Tangente 33 or 35 with an 18 millimetre leather strap, it can look too bulky and put unnecessary tension on the strap

MODALO Inspiration MV4 for 1 watch, black
- The stated load capacity of up to 400 grams is far above anything Nomos makes. Even an Ahoi on a steel bracelet stays well below the limit, so the mechanism never works at its limit
- New Zealand solid wood instead of plastic looks calmer next to a Bauhaus watch. An Orion or Ludwig stands visibly in the foreground in it, without being outshone by a garish display case
- Five programmes and the battery option let you choose the location freely. Even without a power socket, the unit keeps running on a shelf or in a chest of drawers
- The lowest setting is 900 turns per day, which is above our derived range of 650 to 800. Thanks to the slip clutch this is not critical, but it is not exact

Klarstein St. Gallen II
- The first of the four programmes is exactly 650 turns per day. That puts the lower limit of our derived Nomos range right there as the factory setting
- Three rotation directions include the bidirectional mode that, according to Nomos, the DUW automatic movements need. More settings are technically not needed at all for this brand
- At around 350 grams the unit is light and quickly repositioned, and the front door with an acrylic window keeps dust off an exposed dial
- Mains operation only and a plastic housing. Next to a Glashütte three-quarter plate with elaborate hand decoration, the surroundings look plain, yet functionally it remains a good fit

SONGMICS watch winder for 1 watch (JWB030B01)
- An adjustable cushion can be set to a narrow leather strap. With a Tangente with an 18 millimetre lug width, that matters more than any maximum size specification
- Four rotation modes cover clockwise, counter-clockwise and combined operation. For a DUW 3001 or DUW 6101 you choose the combined mode and you are done
- Lockable glass front, switchable LED light and USB-C operation add up to a surprisingly complete feature set in this price range
- SONGMICS does not document how many turns per day each mode delivers. Here we rely solely on the details about modes and rotation direction
Turns per day for Nomos calibres
With Nomos, the construction type comes before the number. That is why our table deliberately includes the manual-wind movements, even though they should never end up on a winder. The automatic movements, by contrast, are straightforward, because Nomos states the winding direction itself: the rotors of the DUW automatic calibres wind in both directions. For the DUW 6101, the manufacturer also states a reversal angle reduced to ten degrees. Nomos does not publish its own turns figure for watch winders, however. The value of 650 to 800 in the table is therefore explicitly derived and comes from our overview of turns per day, where bidirectionally winding three-hand movements lie in exactly this range.
| Calibre | Construction and features | Derived turns per day | Rotation direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alpha, Alpha.2, Alpha.3 | Manual wind, 23.3 mm diameter, 2.6 mm high, 17 jewels, 21,600 vph, around 43 h; incl. Tangente 35, Orion 38, Ludwig, Club, Tetra | Manual wind, does not belong on a winder | not applicable |
| DUW 4001 and DUW 4001 Duo | Manual wind with swing system and DUW regulating system, 17 jewels, around 53 h; incl. Club Campus | Manual wind, does not belong on a winder | not applicable |
| DUW 4101 | Manual wind with date, 32.1 mm diameter, under 3 mm high, around 42 h; incl. Orion 38 Datum, Metro 38 Datum | Manual wind, does not belong on a winder | not applicable |
| DUW 4301 and DUW 4401 | Manual wind with power reserve indicator or with date and power reserve, 2.8 mm high, since 2014; incl. Tetra, Metro, Tangente | Manual wind, does not belong on a winder | not applicable |
| DUW 1001 and DUW 2002 | Manual wind, 3.6 mm high, double barrel, around 84 h; fine movements, incl. Lambda | Manual wind, does not belong on a winder | not applicable |
| DUW 3001 | Automatic with swing system, 28.8 mm diameter, only 3.2 mm high, 27 jewels, 21,600 vph, 43 h; neomatik models since 2015 | 650 to 800 (derived) | bidirectional (Nomos specification) |
| DUW 5001 | Automatic, 31 mm diameter, 4.3 mm high, 26 jewels, 21,600 vph, 43 h, since 2018; incl. Ahoi neomatik | 650 to 800 (derived) | bidirectional (Nomos specification) |
| DUW 6101 | Automatic with date ring, 35.2 mm diameter, only 3.6 mm high, 21,600 vph, around 42 h; incl. Tangente neomatik 41 Update | 650 to 800 (derived) | bidirectional, reversal angle 10 degrees |
| DUW 5201 | Automatic with world time, 5.7 mm high, 26 jewels, up to 42 h; Zürich Weltzeit | 650 to 800 (derived) | bidirectional (Nomos specification) |
The table shows an unusually clear divide. On one side is a whole family of manual-wind movements that hardly any other brand in this price class still offers. On the other side are four automatic calibres that all need the same setting. The movement height is remarkable here: the DUW 3001 measures only 3.2 millimetres, the DUW 6101 only 3.6 millimetres despite its date ring. By comparison, a common Swiss three-hand movement such as the Sellita SW 200-1 is 4.6 millimetres. This slim construction is the reason Nomos cases turn out so thin.
In practice this means: check the calibre first, not the model line. The name Tangente says nothing about the winding type, because there is the Tangente 35 with the manual-wind calibre Alpha and the Tangente neomatik 41 Update with the automatic movement DUW 6101. The same goes for Orion, Ludwig and Club. If your watch's data sheet lists a movement numbered 3001, 5001, 5201 or 6101, a winder makes sense. If it lists Alpha or a number from the 4000 series, the watch belongs in your hand. How to do that properly is explained in our basics article Winding an automatic watch correctly.
What matters in a watch winder for Nomos
The most important point is whether your watch has a rotor at all. Nomos has never given up manual winding, quite the opposite: the Alpha calibre from 2005 was the brand's first in-house manufacture movement and is still running today. It measures 23.3 millimetres in diameter, is only 2.6 millimetres high, works with 17 jewels and 21,600 half-oscillations per hour and delivers around 43 hours of power reserve. Added to this are the Alpha.2 and Alpha.3 variants as well as the more modern DUW 4001 with around 53 hours. The movements DUW 4101, DUW 4301 and DUW 4401 with date or power reserve indicator are also manual-wind calibres. A winder simply does nothing for any of these watches, because there is no rotor for it to set in motion. Whether a unit is worthwhile for your watch is clarified in a few minutes by Does my watch need a watch winder?.
The second key point is the size of the holder, and with Nomos the situation is exactly the reverse of many other brands. With dive watches the question is whether a mount is large and strong enough. With Nomos the question is whether it is small enough. The Tangente 35 measures 35 millimetres in diameter, is only 6.2 millimetres high and carries an 18 millimetre wide strap. The Tangente in 38.5 millimetres comes to 6.9 millimetres in height with a 19 millimetre lug width, and the Tangente neomatik 41 Update to 40.5 millimetres in diameter, around 7.9 millimetres in height and a 20 millimetre lug width. Even the sportier models stay moderate: Club Campus 36 at 8.1 millimetres in height, Ahoi in 36 or 40 millimetres, Zürich Weltzeit at 39.9 millimetres. A cushion built for a 45 mm case with a steel bracelet permanently overstretches a narrow Nomos leather strap. So look for an adjustable or small-sized cushion. Nomos does not publish weight figures in its technical data, but with thin cases and leather straps the load capacity is never the bottleneck anyway.
The third point is pleasantly simple. Unlike brands with chronograph movements of the 7750 type, with Nomos you do not need a single direction. For its DUW automatic movements, the manufacturer expressly specifies a rotor that winds in both directions. A unit with bidirectional mode is therefore entirely sufficient. That leaves only the derived figure: we use 650 to 800 turns per day, because bidirectionally winding three-hand movements of this type lie exactly there. There is no manufacturer specification from Nomos for this, and we say so openly. You do not need to fear too many turns, because the slip clutch in the barrel prevents the mainspring from being overwound.
Only after that come the usual criteria. If the unit will stand in the bedroom, it is worth a look at our overview of the quiet watch winder, because a permanently running motor on the bedside table quickly becomes annoying. If it needs to go somewhere without a power socket, the comparison of battery-powered watch winders helps. If you want to spend little, you will find suitable models under affordable watch winders. And because the DUW 3001 and DUW 5001 get by with 43 hours, a Nomos in a drawer usually stands still after a weekend. What lies behind this is explained in Power reserve explained.
Which unit for whom
If you wear a Tangente neomatik, an Orion neomatik or an Ahoi neomatik and want to hit the derived range as precisely as possible, the botta Cube is the first choice. Nine programmes from 600 to 1,800 turns per day give you a gradation that no other unit in this selection offers, and at around 14 decibels it stays almost inaudible. If you want the same precision as plain numerical values on the switch, take the Barrington Single with its 650 setting. More single units are collected in the comparison Watch winders for 1 watch.
If the unit should come from a German manufacturer and grow with you later, the Beco Technic Boxy is the more well-rounded solution. One module stays compact, and a second can be stacked on at any time if an Ahoi joins the Tangente neomatik. If your watch instead stands on an open shelf and the surroundings should look high-quality, the MODALO Inspiration MV4 in New Zealand solid wood is the most beautiful choice in this selection. Its load capacity of up to 400 grams is far above anything Nomos makes.
If you want to spend little and still have 650 as the factory setting, go for the Klarstein St. Gallen II. If the watch should also be lockable and illuminated, the SONGMICS is the cheapest way in. If you are interested in a particular maker, you will find the ranges at Beco Technic, Barrington, MODALO, Klarstein and SONGMICS, gathered in the brand overview. The full data sheets are in our overview of data checks.
Editorial verdict
With Nomos, the first question matters more than any product choice: does your watch have a rotor at all? For Alpha, Alpha.2, Alpha.3, DUW 4001, DUW 4101, DUW 4301 and DUW 4401, the answer is no. You wind these watches by hand, and a winder is wasted money there. If, on the other hand, there is a DUW 3001, DUW 5001, DUW 5201 or DUW 6101 in the case, the setting is quickly found. Alternating rotation is enough, because Nomos specifies a bidirectionally winding rotor for these movements, plus our derived 650 to 800 turns per day. You never need a single direction here, as with chronographs of the 7750 type.
Our recommendation is therefore the botta Cube for the most precise and quietest setting, the Beco Technic Boxy as the top-rated all-rounder made in Germany, the Barrington Single for documented figures, the MODALO Inspiration MV4 for the open shelf, the Klarstein St. Gallen II as the cheapest route to 650, and the SONGMICS for a lockable entry-level option. In any case, pay more attention to the size of the cushion than to a high load capacity, because Nomos builds small and flat. And to be clear: none of the devices shown here is recommended, licensed or approved by Nomos Glashütte, we only assess technical suitability.
Buying guides for other watch brands
A large part of the collection runs on manual winding and does not belong on a device at all, with automatics only in the DUW calibres. For other brands the question is different: Glashütte Original, Sinn, Hamilton, Rolex, Omega, Tudor, Breitling, IWC, Panerai, TAG Heuer, Longines, Oris, Seiko, Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Zenith, Tissot, Certina, Mido, Grand Seiko, Bell und Ross, Rado, Maurice Lacroix, Frederique Constant, Junghans. All documented values per calibre are collected in our table of turns per day.
The devices from Beco Technic and Barrington suit small, flat cases, both with holders that also grip narrow straps cleanly. The brand overview covers all manufacturers.
